The Captain Lou Fleet sails for the following species in accordance with federal,
state and local conservation laws.
In addition, hooks and sinkers are complimentary on all trips
(offshore trips may vary).
Winter Flounder (March – May)
We spend a good portion of the early season targeting winter flounder. Over the past several years, we have seen the catches steadily on the rise. Late April into May seems to bring warm weather and quality action, with many limits taken on half-day trips. We supply fresh mussels and clams for bait. In addition, we supply clam chum. Worms are available for purchase aboard the vessel.
Mackerel (April, December – January)
The Mackerel season may be short, but it is very sweet. Anglers can enjoy a day of nonstop action on one of our mackerel trips. Where else can you catch five fish at one time? When the fish make their run past our shoreline, you can always count on a short ride and a full bag. Diamond jigs and mackerel rigs are available for purchase aboard the vessel.
Fluke/Summer Flounder (May – September)
The South Shore of Long Island has been a “hot bed” for fluke fishing in recent years. It has been said that the fluking is better now than it has been in the last 20 years. For the Captain Lou Fleet, early season fluke fishing is mostly concentrated in the local bays. Over the past few years, the bay has provided unparalleled action and many jumbo fluke in the 5-7 lb. range. As both the air and water temperatures rise (July to September), the action seems to switch to the cooler waters out in the ocean. Some of the largest South Shore fluke have come over our rails with many in the 8-10 lb. range. We supply fresh spearing and fluke belly strips for bait. In addition, live killies and frozen squid are available for purchase aboard the vessel.
Sea Bass & Porgies (August – November)
Bottom fishing or wreck fishing offers fast-paced action any angler would enjoy. Concentrating on local wrecks, reefs and rock piles, we guarantee a great trip for fishermen of all ages. The past five years have seen staggering numbers of good size sea bass and porgies coming over the rails. Anglers are easily achieving limits on half-day trips with plenty of “jumbo” sea bass and “humpback” porgies to go around for everyone. It is not uncommon to see a 5-6 lb. sea bass or a 3-4 lb. “dinner plate size” porgy on a Captain Lou wreck trip. We supply fresh clams for bait.
Blackfish (October – January)
Another species we target on wreck trips is blackfish or tautog. One of the most challenging types fishing, blackfishing can also be one of the most rewarding. Blackfish are well known for their fighting ability as well as their succulent taste as part of a meal. Our trips see blackfish in the 6-8 lb. range taken daily with many fish in the 8-10 lb. range mixed in. We supply fresh clams and live green crabs for bait.
